Barry T. Coates

Guitarist/Composer Barry Coates is a third generation Californian born in Oakland. He studied music for two years at College of Marin, then went on to receive his Bachelor of Music Degree from North Texas State University. Coates professional career began at age 17, when he was asked to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival with an all-star big band conducted by Oliver Nelson. From the late 1970?s to the present time Barry has been involved in LA?s entertainment industry as a performer and recording guitarist with The Pointer Sisters, Willie Bobo, John Klemmer, Moacir Santos, Auracle, John Serry, The Urban Ensemble and Kitaro ( 2 World Tours & the Live in America Video & CD). Barry?s dedication and love for music has given him opportunities to play with some of the best musicians who frequently comment of how much they appreciate his musical compositions. Barry writes generously and leaves artists room to expand and express their own musical voice within his songs. Barry is best known for his unique timings and flowing melodies. His original compositions have been featured on television shows ?Two on the Town?, ?Eye on Hollywood ?,?Partners in Crime?, ?The Tonight Show,? plus the feature films ?Fatal Attraction? and ?Dead Bang.? Barry?s first record ?Because I Love You? (Barry Coates & the Hats) received high acclaim and air play from jazz radio stations world-wide. It featured Barry?s jazz instrumentals with vocal compositions and a superstar line-up of musicians including Jimmy ?Flim? Johnson (bass), Sam Riney (sax), Luis Conte (percussion) and Rich Eames (piano). Barry?s second record, ?Move Like A Dancer? on Artful Balance Records featured saxophonist Bob Sheppard and also received major recognition from jazz reviewers & public across the country. Barry?s extensive music library includes over 150 original songs & arrangements ranging from simple melodies to intricate jazz compositions. More recently, Barry?s collaboration with bassist Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets has produced an impressive selection of original compositions that can be heard on Barry?s CD ?The Spirit Within?, as well as The Yellowjackets ?The Spin? and Luis Conte?s ?Black Forest?. Barry?s ?The Spirit Within? CD is a collection of original compositions written by this dynamic duo. It features Barry?s dazzling guitar synthesizer work combining with Jimmy Haslip?s virtuoso bass playing and writing. Barry?s teaching credentials include guitar instructor at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood California and teaching at the Los Angeles Music academy in Pasadena California.
